One of the most confusing things about analogue cameras is “chasing the signal”
. Unlike digital video cameras, you’ll need several cables that all have to be connected to the right places. Most of our frustrating experiences have always
come from cables being plugged into the wrong place at the wrong time.
Make sure you are familiar with where the in/out places are on both your computer and your camera. The photos below show a Sony Hi8 camera and
Pinnacle’s Studio DC10 capture card. Video is connected with composite video cable. Audio goes in through the computer “line in” or “mic” port using a “Y” adapter. The
“Y” adapter takes signal from two composite leads (white & red cable) to a single “mini plug” that is inserted into the “line in” port. To get signals out to camera or
VCR when your project is done, simply take cables out of computer “in” ports and plug into computer “out” ports.
